Man, 27, from India killed in rare fatal bear attack in northern Saskatchewan.
The man who died in a bear attack at a remote uranium exploration site in northern Saskatchewan on Friday was a 27-year-old from India. According to his brother, the 27-year-old came to Canada three years ago and was living in Penticton, B.C. He came north for contract work at the Zoo Bay property, operated by Vancouver-based UraniumX Discovery Corp., located roughly 850 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
Douglas Clark, a professor at the University of Saskatchewan’s School of Environment and Sustainability and a former national park warden who specializes in human-bear conflict, said fatal bear attacks in Saskatchewan are extraordinarily uncommon. This incident is only the fourth in the province’s recorded history.
The provincial government issued a reminder on Friday morning — the same day as the attack — that bears were emerging from their dens and that people should take precautions.
A civilian on site shot and killed the bear. It has since been transported to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, where a necropsy will be completed. Investigators will examine the bear’s health, body condition, and any physical evidence that could shed light on what happened.
