The B.C. Conservation Officer Service says a grizzly attack in the McGregor Mountain area northeast of Prince George, B.C., is under investigation.

Two hikers were taken to the hospital after they were attacked by a grizzly bear on a hiking trail northeast of Prince George, B.C., on Sunday, according to officials.

B.C. Emergency Health Services said a critical care helicopter responded to the scene around 3 p.m. PT Sunday. Two patients were transported to the Prince George Airport, the service said, and then taken to the hospital by ground ambulance.

The hikers were attacked in a popular hiking area in the McGregor Mountain range, according to Eamon McArthur with the B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS). The range covers several remote paths whose trailheads are accessible by a forest service road about 100 kilometres northeast of Prince George.  McArthur said investigators are still determining exactly what happened, but noted the hikers had safety gear.
